I’d choose Arcanine from Pokémon.
Partly because it is basically the ultimate dog.
It is loyal, protective, ridiculously fast, and somehow manages to look both intimidating and like something you would absolutely want sleeping at the foot of your bed. As someone who already loves dogs, choosing a Pokémon that feels like an enormous, fire-powered version of one seems pretty natural.
And if we are talking about a lifelong companion, loyalty matters more to me than having the most powerful or exotic creature imaginable.
Arcanine feels like the kind of companion that would actually be part of your life. Going on trips. Exploring trails. Hanging around the house. Coming along on adventures. And considering how fast it can supposedly travel, road trips would suddenly become a lot more interesting.
There would definitely be some practical concerns.
For one thing, I would need to dramatically reconsider my homeowners insurance. And I am not sure how you explain to the neighbors that the enormous orange dog in the backyard can breathe fire.
But those feel manageable.
What I like most about the idea is that Arcanine combines the best parts of a fantasy creature with something familiar. It is extraordinary, but the relationship itself would still feel like having a dog: companionship, trust, loyalty, and the quiet comfort of having a friend who is always happy to see you.
So yes, I’d pick Arcanine.
Basically a dog.
Just with better transportation options and significantly more fire.
