Customers browsing vinyl records and drinking coffee in a listening café

If You Could Start a New Business Right Now, What Would It Be?

I think I’d open an independent record store with a coffee bar and listening space.

Not just a place that sells vinyl, but somewhere people would actually want to spend time.

I’d want new releases, used records, obscure finds, local music, and the kind of bins you can lose an hour flipping through without realizing it. There would be good coffee, comfortable chairs, turntables where people could actually listen before buying, and maybe a small space for live acoustic sets, album-release nights, or conversations about music.

Basically, I’d want it to feel less like retail and more like a clubhouse for people who genuinely love music.

Streaming has made music incredibly convenient, but I think people still want something physical and communal. There is a different feeling when you find an album in person, hold the artwork, talk to somebody who knows the record, and take it home knowing exactly where you found it.

I’d also want the store to be welcoming to people who know absolutely nothing about vinyl. No gatekeeping. No making somebody feel stupid because they do not know which pressing they have or what cartridge they should buy. If someone walks in because they just bought their first turntable and want three great records, that should be just as fun as helping a serious collector track down something rare.

Maybe that is the business I would build.

Records, coffee, conversation, discovery, and a place where people can slow down for a while.

And yes, I would probably spend way too much of the inventory budget buying records for myself.View all responses
