If money were off the table, I’d be a lighthouse keeper. I realize the position barely exists anymore, which only sweetens the deal. Nobody schedules a meeting with the lighthouse guy. There are no quarterly goals for the beam. Your entire performance review is one question: did the light stay on? Yes? Outstanding, see you next year.
I like work with a visible point. Most modern jobs are seventeen layers removed from anything you can watch happen. A lighthouse is the opposite. Ships head toward rocks, you shine a light, ships do not hit rocks. You can see your impact from the kitchen window.
Would I get lonely? Probably. But I already spend most of my day alone staring at a glowing screen, so the main change would be the view, the salt air, and the sudden absence of passwords.
Same pay, better metaphors. Sign me up.
