In 214 BC, during the Second Punic War, the Roman commander Marcus Claudius Marcellus brought 60 quinqueremes and ship-borne siege towers called sambucae against the seaward walls of Syracuse under cover of darkness. According to ancient accounts, including Livy’s description of an Iron Hand, the ships were met not by catapults but by a crane that dropped an iron hook onto a bow, hoisted the vessel into the air, shook it, and released it to shatter on the rocks or capsize. This episode asks whether that machine, the Claw of Archimedes, was real engineering or Roman propaganda to excuse a humiliating defeat.
