What’s the Most Profound Piece of Advice You’ve Been Given? Did You Take It?

What’s the most profound piece of advice you’ve been given? Did you take it?

The most profound advice I’ve ever heard is simple: “Enjoy every sandwich.”

Warren Zevon said that near the end of his life, and what makes it so powerful is how ordinary it sounds at first. It’s not dressed up like wisdom. It doesn’t try to impress you. But that’s exactly why it stays with me. It takes this huge, frightening truth, that life is short, fragile, and never fully under our control, and brings it down to something small enough to actually live. A sandwich. Lunch. An ordinary moment. The kind of thing most people rush through without noticing.

That’s the point, I think.

The advice isn’t really about food. It’s about presence. It’s about not waiting for the perfect day, the big breakthrough, the meaningful milestone before you allow yourself to be alive inside your own life. It’s about understanding that most of life is not made up of grand moments. It’s made up of regular ones. A meal. A conversation. A drive home. A laugh you didn’t expect. A quiet morning. If you miss those because you’re always chasing something bigger, you may end up missing your life while you were busy trying to improve it.

Did I take that advice? I think I’m still learning how.

Some days, yes. Some days I remember to slow down. To look up. To actually listen when someone is talking. To enjoy the coffee, the weather, the company, the silence. Other days, I get pulled into the usual things, stress, planning, ambition, distraction, all the noise that makes a person forget where they are. So I wouldn’t say I mastered the advice. But I do think I’ve carried it with me.

And maybe that’s what taking advice really looks like. Not obeying it perfectly, but returning to it. Letting it correct you. Letting it remind you that a meaningful life is not built only from major decisions. It’s also built from attention. From gratitude. From being awake enough to recognize that even the smallest parts of the day are still your days.

So yes, that’s the most profound advice I’ve heard: enjoy every sandwich.

Because in the end, wisdom doesn’t always arrive as a grand speech.

Sometimes it shows up as lunch.
