I’m going with The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells.
There are plenty of fictional worlds that would be unpleasant to live in, but this one has a particularly bad combination of problems.
First, Martians invade Earth.
And these are not friendly aliens who show up, ask to meet our leaders, and share the secrets of faster-than-light travel. They arrive with giant fighting machines, heat rays, poisonous black smoke, and essentially zero interest in discussing humanity’s long-term plans.
That already feels like a major downside.
Then civilization starts collapsing around you. Transportation stops being reliable. Cities become dangerous. Everyone is trying to escape at the same time. Food and shelter become uncertain. And wherever you think might be safe, there is always the possibility that an enormous three-legged machine will appear over the horizon and immediately ruin your afternoon.
Even the environment starts becoming alien.
There is red weed spreading across the landscape, destruction everywhere, and a growing sense that humans may no longer be the dominant species on their own planet.
And the worst part?
There is almost nothing useful you personally can do about any of it.
You are not the chosen one. You do not have magical powers. There is no secret resistance base waiting to recruit you.
You are basically just trying to survive while technologically superior aliens remodel England without asking permission.
So yes, The War of the Worlds would be my choice.
I love reading about a Martian invasion.
I have absolutely no interest in experiencing one.
Especially if the evacuation plan involves nineteenth-century transportation.
Which book’s world would be the absolute worst to live in?
